Awakened
Oil paint on 30 x 40 inch canvas
This painting is inspired by a recent chapter in my self-growth journey. Awakened represents that pivotal moment of crisis—the jolt that pulls us out of unconsciousness and forces us to seek understanding.
The woman in the painting is roused from sleep by an unknown sound in the night. Draped in a mint-green nightgown edged with soft pink fur, she carefully descends the spiral staircase of her castle, a candelabra in hand, casting flickering light onto the stone walls. Her harlequin-patterned skin, woven from deep blue and pale flesh tones, symbolizes the contrast of opposing thoughts and emotions. The magenta outlining the diamond shapes glows under the candlelight, emphasizing the tension between fear and clarity.
On the steps below, a frightened mouse lingers in the shadows, while above, a pink spider lowers itself from its web. Both creatures represent our fears—the things that unsettle us in the dark—yet they are often much smaller than we imagine.
I see the castle as a representation of the mind, its winding staircase leading deeper into self-reflection. The woman embodies the self, cautiously navigating her own consciousness. The candelabra she carries is the spark of awareness, the newfound understanding that illuminates her reality and sharpens her perception. Awakened is about that search for truth—the journey through fear, doubt, and discovery.
